Identifying Signs Of A Language And Communication

Abstract Students were observed in a classroom setting for the purpose of identifying signs of a language and communication disorder. Speech, reading and writing skills were examined to identify areas of atypical development and to determine the appropriate formal assessment needed to further evaluate the student exhibiting a language deficit. A correlation between problems with expressive oral and written language was noted on observation. Possible intervention strategies are discussed to help a student with language deficits succeed. Reading is not encouraged at home and Daniel spends his days watching television or playing video games according to his own admission. Daniel is a friendly, active child that likes to socialize with his teachers and peers. He is extremely affectionate and compassionate towards other students often trying to console any student who is upset or ill. Daniel is eager to help other students and is concerned for their well-being. Daniel’s medical forms are on file with the school and document no hearing deficits. On his Individualized Education Program or IEP, Daniel has a diagnosis of Other Health Impairment, specifically attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The core features of children with ADHD include hyperactivity, impulsivity, and in attentiveness (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). George is a nine-year-old typical male in the same class as Daniel with average speech and language development. George comes from an English speaking family and resides in Staten Island, New York. George lives with his biological parents and his older sister. He is reading at a fourth grade level and writing at a high third grade level. George speaks easily and communicates his ideas. He can read a variety of genres and is able to summarize a story in his own words. He can write a response to literature using proper grammar and spelling.
