Comparing Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau Essay Example for Free

Contrasting Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau Essay In numerous works of writing, writers express their perspectives on society and times where they live. In the paper â€Å"Self Reliance† by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the book Walden by Henry David Thoreau, the writers take a stand in opposition to congruity and realism in the public arena. Both were sentimentalism creators during the 1800s. They concentrated on straightforwardness and independence. The two compositions can educate youngsters today on the significance regarding non-similarity and the benefit of dismissing realism. In â€Å"Self Reliance†, Emerson examines being one’s own individual and not permitting society to shape somebody like a bit of earth; â€Å"Trust thyself† are the specific words he utilized. Believing oneself methods it is alright to appear as something else in the event that one needs or decides to appear as something else. It implies that one doesn't need to follow the â€Å"bad† swarm since every other person might be deciding to do as such. One must realize that in the event that they have a smart thought and in the event that they have faith in that ideaeven in the event that it is not quite the same as the standard of societysome individuals will follow. Emerson likewise says, â€Å"Whoso would take care of business, must be a non-conventionalist. † This implies to be a valid and genuine individual, one must support what they have confidence in and not permit themselves to be totally changed by society. One must not comply with ways that will make them be a person or thing outside of their own wants. In the start of his composition, Emerson gives us a meaning of what he accepts characterizes virtuoso: â€Å"To accept your own idea, to accept that what is valid for you in your private heart is valid for all menâ€that is virtuoso. ’ This is his method for saying that each individual should realize that doing what one believes is correct is simply the best decisionâ€for him. Each informed individual doesn't comply with society in the event that they don't believe that society is going in the correct way. Emerson additionally says that individuals who have smart thoughts are misconstrued. In his announcement, â€Å"To be extraordinary is to be misunderstood†, Emerson is stating that a great many people who had good thoughts in history were misconstrued on the grounds that their thoughts were not alongside the standards of society’s thoughts. Consequently, the cultural conventionalists felt that their thoughts weren't right. Emerson gives reasons with regards to why a great many people comply with society and attempt to be the equivalent. He says, â€Å"The other dread that alarms us from self-trust is our consistency†meaning that individuals may follow society since that is the thing that they are accustomed to doing. They are possibly doing what they saw happening when they were more youthful. Their folks and different grown-ups likely did likewise that the vast majority do todayconform. Emerson debates this explanation in his announcement by saying, â€Å"But for what reason would it be a good idea for you to keep your head behind you? Assume you ought to repudiate yourself; what at that point? It is by all accounts a standard of insight never to depend on your memory alone†. Depending on the past could be tricky when somebody addresses things since most were presumably raised a specific way and are accustomed to doing things a similar way, yet never truly knew a valid justification for what reason to accommodate. In â€Å"Walden†, Thoreau clarifies how having less material things can essentially your life. He says, â€Å"Our developments are wont to be pretty toys, which divert our consideration from genuine things† In saying this, he intends to possess your things and don't let them own you. Thoreau feels that individuals want to claim things, subsequently, making them need to utilize the entirety of their time attempting to possess talked. Working constantly implies that one can not do the things that one needs to, and that the things that one wants winds up possessing them. Through this announcement, Thoreau is essentially saying that having every one of these things, for example, mobile phones, iPods, workstations, and TVs are diverting individuals from the more significant things in life, for example, family, wellbeing, and prosperity. One of Thoreau’s adages is, â€Å"Simplicity, straightforwardness, effortlessness! † This way to make ones’ life as basic as could be expected under the circumstances. He imagines that the poor are the blessed ones since they have the least to take care of and stress over while the rich have such a great amount to care for that they don't possess energy for themselves. Carrying on with a basic life empowers one to be liberated from duty and commitments. One just needs to stress over one’s self. Both Emerson and Thoreau accept that following one’s own way in life is the most ideal approach. They accept that acting naturally and having a basic life is the best life. The two exercises can be significant in today’s society by taking a gander at the provincial regions that despite everything exist in the United States. A portion of these regions despite everything follow the guideline of a straightforward and non-materialistic life. Their lives are not loaded up with innovation and different things that divert a great many people from life. Youngsters (myself included), can remove much from Emerson’s and Thoreau’s works. I could concentrate on more significant things in life as opposed to burning through bunches of time on pointless innovation, for example, Facebook and Twitter. We could utilize innovation under control and ensure that those things don't occupy additional time than should be expected in our lives.

An Intrinsic Value Of Mine - 1364 Words

Chapter One: Name two things in your life that you consider intrinsically valuable. Name three things that are instrumentally valuable. In my life I consider happiness and kindness intrinsically valuable. For something to be intrinsically valuable it is said that, that something must be â€Å"valuable because they are what they are, without being a means to something else† (Vaughn 6). I find kindness to be an intrinsic value of mine because I believe that being kind to others is something that you should always do and a value that should be universally shared, not because I myself or anyone on the receiving end will benefit from the kindness. Do you believe a serial killer’s murders are justified? If not, is your judgment based on a subjective relativist’s perspective or an objectivist perspective? According to subjective relativism, an action is thought to be morally right if one approves of it (Vaughn 22). Therefore, when the serial killer says that he himself approves of his actions while others may not, his claim of approval justifies his murders. When applying subjective relativism to the situation, the actions of the serial killer are not considered to be morally wrong (Vaughn 22). Sociology and Friends free essay sample

How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value How Can I Help My Friends Realize Their Value Words: 713 The value of friendship is said to be the greatest one among mankind. True friends make others realize their true value. Trying to make someone realize their value can be a difficult process because they might not even realize it themselves. Showing someone how important they are will result in them being a stronger person and in you being a better friend. Friends are meant to help others out in times of need and by doing so we need to show our friends their true value and accomplishing such a task may at times prove to be difficult. Having true friends is very important as it gives us the chance to get advice in times of need, a shoulder to cry on and the ability to share the happiest moments of our life. We will write a custom essay sample on Sociology and Friends or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In all of this we sometimes forget to show others how important they are to us and this can degrade the friendship over a period of time. In today’s fast society there is just not the time to take out and relax. We live in a world that is moving at a very fast rate and taking out time for loved ones usually gets put on the back burner. We need to take out time for our friends and show them their importance but also do something genuinely for them from the bottom of our hearts. We need to put them top on our priority list because value is only given to something that is at the top of our lists. We are investing time with them and it not only shows how much time you want to spend with them but also how you truly value them. Realizing someone’s importance can be hard but once we lose them it suddenly becomes clear to us. We need to give our friends respect because without respect you will not get any back and it just shows, â€Å"you care†. Friends share their most inanimate secrets and help each other out in times of need. This is actually a very important part in friendship because with sharing your problems with your friend it shows that you trust him or her enough to be sharing it with them in the first place. This also shows that you value their advice. You are open to them and you give them the courage to come and talk to you which shows them how important they are in your life and you challenge yourself by giving a part of yourself to them. You need to acknowledge them in such a way by showing them that they are of some importance to your life; and without them it would be difficult for you to go on in life. Show your friends that you truly appreciate them and you are grateful that they are there for you. We should stop looking for the flaws in other individuals. As a society we follow social norms and due to that we like to look for flaws in others, bring others down or show others that we are better than them. In the process of doing so we are bringing other individuals down and abating their value. We need to show our friends that we worry for them and when they are afflicted pain so are we. We need to show our support for them every step along the way and if they are in pain and suffering not look down up upon them but help them bring their head up high and give them the confidence that they are in need of. Friendship is a strong relationship that needs time and energy just like any other relationship in the world. We need to take out time for our friends and help them in desperate times of need. We need to view them as our partners instead of a burden or responsibility that we have to fill. As a society now days we view friendship as harmful at times because of fear that our friend might beat us in any competition of any kind but that is because trust is lost and when we start trusting each other and giving respect these problems will go away on their own. Give values to your friends as than they will realize their true value.

Many brands are emulating those of Asian countries. The bulbous designs with round shapes are preferred to those with more angles. In order to investigate whether the round shape of a logo has an effect, the authors investigated the effects of logo redesigning. In the investigation, they were to check on three categories. The first consisted of those that experienced no change in shape, the other category consisted of those logos that had been redesigned to consist of an angular shape and the last category consisted of those that were initially angular but redesigned to be more rounded. The results showed that fifty percent of all the logos that had been investigated changed in shape and sixty-eight percent of them had been redesigned to contain more rounded shapes. Research has suggested that the reactions of the customers towards the shape of the logo differ with the shape of the logo, whether rounded or angular. It has been suggested that the more rounded logos create a perception of approachability, harmony and friendliness. On the other hand, the angular logos depict strength, toughness and energy. This means that the visual effects of a logo would have an implication on the percep tion of the customers. However, the authors did not try to justify that a particular shape is better than the other is. They only tried to explain that if the logo was previously more angular and was redesigned to be more rounded, the customers would spot the difference. They also examined the effects that the magnitude of change in the design of the logo had to the level of commitment by the consumers to the brand. The authors suggested that those consumers who are strongly committed to a particular brand would be affected negatively in the event that the shape of the logo is changed. This is possible due to the importance of logos as the element that represents that particular brand. This is likely lead to negative brand attitudes. In the same line of reasoning, those consumers who previously had a weak brand commitment would most likely develop positive brand attitude towards the redesigning of a brand logo.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? The authors warned managers and explained that managers make a mistake when they think that their most committed customers would be most receptive in the event that the logo is changed. On the contrary, such customers might have a negative brand image when the logo is changed. For example, Apple failed to advertise the new logo effectively but only made its appearance in products and packaging. This might be the reason why the strongly committed consumers responded negatively. They might have been caught by surprise and disappointed by the new look that they had not anticipated. Critique Walsh, Winterich and Mittal (2011) also performed research to investigate how the customer’s response t o the redesigning of a logo from its previous angular shape to a more rounded shape was consistent with their commitment to the brand. The authors argued that the level of commitment of the consumers to the brand moderated the effects on the attitudes towards the brand that are likely to be brought about by the process of redesigning the logo. However, they argued that as much as the commitment to the brand had a positive impact towards brand attitudes of individuals who were previously accustomed to the angular logos, the same commitment had a negative effect towards the brand attitude in the event that the logo was redesigned to be more rounded. The authors also found that brand information was supposed to be consistent with the shape of the logo since inconsistence would affect brand attitudes. Therefore, the authors advised managers to be careful when redesigning logos since inconsistent information would jeopardize brand commitment. Opinion Every company should be careful to en sure that the most committed consumers are maintained. Such activities as the redesigning of the logo should be approached at a certain perspective and be considered wisely. The mere changing of the shape of the logo either to be more rounded or angular has an effect on the brand attitudes and generally toward brand commitment. Managers should understand the implications of logo redesigning before considering performing it. Criminal Psychology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Criminal Psychology - Essay Example Theoretically, it is comparatively a new discipline and the product of post WWII era, when the renowned psychologist Langer was instructed, by the British Government, to explore criminal stimulus behind the personality of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. (Quoted in Wikipedia.org) But in practice, it is as old as human society. The discipline got popularity soon after the psychological investigation of the prisoners of war was started being conducted in England. The basic intention behind it was to assess and estimate the minds of offenders and criminals in order to make laws and establish penalties and punishments on the basis of psychological reasons behind crimes. Crime is a social phenomenon and exists in each and every culture of the world from the most primitive human tribes and clans to the modern contemporary society. With the increase in population of the world at large, the tribes and communities grew widely and developed into society. The crime rate also got its place along with the growth of civilization with an upward trend and increase. The need of rules and system was felt to preserve peace and harmony. Subsequently, social norms, mores and taboos were determined to bring regularity in society. Socio-cultural and political authorities came into being with the passage of time, to evade disturbance and control deviancy from the prescribed manners prevailing in some specific area. Theories were articulated and researches were conducted in order to acquire information and knowledge in respect of motivation behind crime. Abnormal attitude creating public nuisance was declared as crime against the state and its individuals. Durkheim vie ws crime, states Coser (1977:141), as normal in terms of its occurrence, and even as having positive social functions in terms of its consequences. In his words: "Where crime exists, collective sentiments are sufficiently flexible to take on a new form, and

Daniel Suelo the Archetypal hero Essay Example for Free

Daniel Suelo the Archetypal hero Essay The book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell proposes that all myths are essentially hero-quest stories, each of which rings a unique change on a universal pattern; a pattern he calls the â€Å"monomyth.† According to Campbell, the hero’s journey consists of three main moves: departure, initiation, and return. Within each of these categories is a number of stages common to the plots of all hero-quest stories, and can be compared to Daniel Suelos adventure throughout his life. According to the book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, the first move of the journey is departure which starts with the call to adventure. The call of adventure is how the journey starts and with Daniel Suelo it starts with him leaving the last of his money in a telephone booth and going for the adventure (accepting the call to adventure), so there is no direct indication of a call of adventure but leaving behind the money is probably the closest. Sometimes the hero does not accept the call to adventure and refuses it which turns the story to the negative, they lose their power and instead of the saving people, they are the one to be saved for refusing. After refusing their life changes from beautiful and colorful to boring dry and empty, and this is not the same as what happens to Daniel Suelo, but his life before was meaningless and he always wanted to take on the adventure (life with no money), so he probably refused the call before and accepted it later on. And for those who did not refuse the call, accepted it and took it on, the first thing the hero meets is a figure that is protective of them, and provides the hero help against whatever comes up on his or her journey. According to Daniel Suelos story, he has no supernatural aid, and no one on his side to help him with his journey, but later on in his life he does find a man, and has a relationship, and that relationship is possibly what kept him going, because he was very lonely, and his friend protected him from the feeling of being lonely. According to Joseph Campbell, the hero continues his journey until he comes to a threshold guardian, where he must cross the first threshold. This is where the hero must be brave to step in through the threshold to experience the unknown and compared to Daniel Suelos story, he accepted the call to  adventure and gets a supernatural aid, then must go through the threshold which is possibly him leaving his house and leaving his money in the phone booth and taking the world on without any money. The passage of the magical threshold is symbolized in the womb image of the belly of the wale. After the hero taking on the threshold, the hero will easily be sucked into the belly of the wale, and will appear as dead. Daniel Suelos adventure starts with him leaving his money, and ending up living in a cave in Utah, and that is where all his adventures start, and the cave is where he sleeps, which makes him appear as dead, then second day he wakes up hes stronger and hes ready to take on everyt hing. The second big move of the hero is initiation that starts with the road of trials that the hero must go through and experience, to get to the end of his journey. The hero must survive the trials, and this stage in a story in known to be the favorite phase of adventure,  where the hero will meet the unknown and be ready for the unexperienced. The trials in Daniel Suelos life is probably everything he has to face everyday to live human beings, to animals.Sometimes Daniel Suelo had to try his best to keep his cave up in Utah from police officers that wouldnt allow him to live on unused government property. He also how to go through trials asking for food, because Daniel used to only take food from those who offered, or from dumpsters, which is something that some businesses didnt like. For Daniel Suelo, everyday is a road of trials. After comparing Daniel Suelo to the archetypal hero Campbell refers to, its possible to see similarities him and the hero, but it is also hard to find muc h concrete similarities between the two. In the end, according to Campbell, I believe that Daniel is actually an archetypal hero that had to go through trails that each other hero went through in movies, old stories, and modern day story telling.

Kant and Morality Essay -- the categorical imperative

Kant had a different ethical system which was based on reason. According to Kant reason was the fundamental authority in determining morality. All humans possess the ability to reason, and out of this ability comes two basic commands: the hypothetical imperative and the categorical imperative. In focusing on the categorical imperative, in this essay I will reveal the underlying relationship between reason and duty. The categorical imperative suggests that a course of action must be followed because of its rightness and necessity. The course of action taken can also be reasoned by its ability to be seen as a universal law. Universal laws have been deemed as unconditional commands that are binding to everyone at all times. Kant believed that individuals have a freedom to consciously obey the laws of the universe as they are revealed in accordance to our ability to reason. Kant goes a step further to suggest that our actions should be driven by a sense of duty that is dictated by reason. What does it mean to act out of duty? Kant says that this means that we should act out of respect for the moral law. The moral law can be directly related to the categorical imperative. How can we accomplish the task of acting out of duty? We must first recognize and have an understanding of what the moral law is, then a sense of duty should become the motive for our actions. Finally our actions should be compelled by doing what is morally right; which is considered doing what we can ...

Funny in Farsi

Funny in Farsi A Memior of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas is all about her life growing up in California after her dad is moved there but is company form Iran. Being born in Iran she had not learned much English so when she moved to the United State she slowly learned and was the translator for her mother a lot of the time. In her younger years she moved around about every two years and eventually she settled in America after her dad retired from the oil refinery in Iran.Since she was light skinned and had dark hair she could pass for an America as long as she did ot speak because of her accent, this abled her in many ways. After living in America for some time Firoozeh realizes that no one can really say her name the right way because the English language does not use the same sounds that are in the Persian language. Also by taking an America name she would no longer have to spend endless amounts of time trying to explain to people how to say her name.Since she look ed like a young American girl with an American name she could pass for someone that had been born and raised there, that is until she had to open her mouth to say something. After people started to think that she was an American they started to say things that she had never known that they had been saying before, about immigrants from her country. Whilst she has changed her name some Americans that had been traveling in Iran had been taken captive and held for a period of time and while the news was going over the story people started to talk about the issue.By having the American name she heard things that the people really thought about the issues with Iran instead of the polite things they would say to stay off of the subject. Kazem, her father, got fired from his Job for being Iranian during this time and found it very difficult to find another Job. Eventually he stopped putting that he was Persian or Iranian all together and became Turkish, Just so that he could find a Job duri ng Just a difficult time. After all of the problems with Iran went away she went to college at the University of California at Berkeley where she met her husband a Frenchman named Francois.Since Francois was not from the Middle East he was not part of all the craziness with Iran, but he could easily pass for an American because of his white skin. Also if he ad never said anything to anyone no one would ever know about his accent, but then again no big event happened in France that would turn the American people against them. Even though Firoozeh saw the darker side of the citizens in the United States, she did not seem to think that the country was anything less than a blessing, and stayed in the United States as an adult.American attitudes and biases toward immigrants different from country to country and from person to person, some think one way and others think the other way. Normally the things that factor into how a person see's another person are how hat person was raised, wha t beliefs they have, and how strongly they feel about the subject. The biggest factor is the way they were raised because if you are in a household where the parents or grandparents talk about a certain race of people in a bad way, it's the same as monkey see monkey do.If a child over hears there father talking about those stupid Persians, then that child is likely to go and repeat it to a friend, teacher, nanny, or another Persian themselves. Mainly the behavior towards immigrants has been learned whilst the child was growing up or even as an adult eople tend to believe things that they hear, and repeat them to other people which then lead to more people thinking the exact same way as the people that has said these things in the first place.Stereotypes about people happen on a day to day bias, someone sees some that has been wearing the same Jacket all winter and of they think that they are poor and probably cannot afford a new coat. When in all truth that person could Just be wear ing their favorite coat or this one may be the warmest of all the coats they own, a person can never tell anything about a person by Just briefly seeing them in the same hings or at the same places.People think that is someone from one country will do something harsh, rash, dangerous, or illegal that all people from that country are going to do it, and that has never been the case. If someone from a small town goes and robs a bank does that mean that everyone in that town is now going to go and rob another bank somewhere else, no it does not. By grouping people together as being all the same that is Just putting them into one group for one reason are they going to be separate into which are more likely to do this and which are more likely to o that, the answer is no.Firoozeh Dumas was born in Iran and then around seven moved to the United States, but she never thought any less of the people her the whole time she stayed and now even as an adult she live in California. Even after all the hardships she faced form moving here not knowing English and having to translate for her mother, going back to Iran and then coming back again. She saw all of the bias and the problems that people have with other countries and immigrants, she grew up in a world where not everyone is accepted for whole they truly are.

My Understanding Of Theology, Faith, And Religion Essay

Before I took this course, I thought that I would be learning all of the things that I had learned when I went to Sunday School. I was wrong. I learned so much more than that. I learned how to question ideas in our society, what it is to be human, why we have evil in this world, and most of all, I learned how to think for myself outside of the Church. In the beginning of the semester, my understanding of theology, faith, and religion together were words that are interchangeable with one another. I understood what faith was and that it is a belief and trust in God. Later, I found that religion is much different than a total trust and belief in God. I found out in the beginning of the semester that many people around the world have faith in God, but do not necessarily belong to an institution with rules and practices. Throughout the semester, Elie Wiesel, Jane Goodall, and Pope Francis challenged me to look at the world differently through a theological lens. However, I quickly realize d that theology is much more than those things. It is the study of human beings and our relationships with God. It is the study of what makes us human. Theology asks questions such as, what is our purpose as humans and tries to answer that question through a faith-filled lens. The theologian that challenged my ideas of what makes us human is Jane Goodall. She talks about how written language, ability to teach our history, and our ability to communicate our feelings of awe are among other traitsShow MoreRelatedThe Concepts Of Religious Faith1182 Words   |  5 PagesThe concepts of religious faith, theology, belief and spirituality are all interconnected and very easy to get mixed up. This is because they all have something to do with the other. Richard P. Mcbrien explains how religious faith, theology, beliefs, and spirituality are all connected.
